Tuition Fees and Scholarships

Turku University of Applied Sciences will charge a tuition fee from students who are not citizens of countries of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland.

The annual tuition fee in Turku UAS is 11 500 EUR per academic year (1 August – 31 July) for non-EU/EEA students who study in Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programmes offered in English.

Tuition fee does not include student housing or other living or study related costs.

The tuition fee does not concern those non-EU/EEA students who

  • study in degree programmes taught in Finnish;
  • have started their studies before autumn 2017;
  • have been accepted as transfer students in Turku UAS, started their studies in another UAS before 1 August 2017 and have not been required to pay tuition fee earlier.

Please note also: The Ministry of education and culture is preparing changes in legislation considering application fees for applicants to degree programmes in higher education. Read more about the preparations to introduce application fees.

Exemption from paying tuition fees

You are exempted from paying tuition fees if you have one of the documents below and provide a copy of it:

  • Passport or identity card to indicate the citizenship of EU/EEA/Switzerland*
  • Continuous residence permit in Finland, Type A permit issued for purposes other than studies or
  • Permanent residence permit card in Finland, Type P permit or
  • EU residence permit for third-country citizens with long-term residence card in Finland (Type P-EU) or
  • EU Blue Card in Finland or
  • EU Family Member’s Residence Card in Finland

*Citizens of Finland are not required to provide proof of their citizenship as it will be verified from the population register.

Please, note: Type A permit granted for studying in Finland (from 15 April 2022 onwards) doesn’t exempt student from paying tuition fee. Also a family member of a person who has a continuous residence permit (A-type permit) granted for studying in Finland, is required to pay tuition fees. Therefore, if you have a continuous residence permit card (type A permit) issued on the basis of family ties, you need to attach also a copy of your residence permit decision and your sponsor’s residence permit card to your application.

The decision whether you are required to pay fees or not is made based only on the Finnish Immigration Service’s residence permit decision, which is checked from the copy of your residence permit card attached to your application documents. The document must be valid on 1 August to be exempted from tuition fee on autumn semester and 1 January to be exempted from tuition fee on spring semester.

Notice, if you receive one of the documents mentioned above at any point of the application period or later during your studies, please provide us the document immediately. You will be exempted from paying the tuition fees starting from the next semester at Turku UAS.

Scholarship programme

This scholarship programme applies to students whose right to study has started in 2021 or later (application period in autumn 2020 or later).

The student can apply for a refund for the tuition fee based on the national certificate of language proficiency in the Finnish language, i.e. the YKI certificate. Read more about the national certificate of language proficiency.

The amount of the scholarship based on the YKI certificate in the Finnish language is EUR 4 000 when the student has paid EUR 11 500 tuition fee for the previous academic year and EUR 2 000 when the student has paid EUR 5 750 tuition fee for the previous academic year. The scholarship can be granted only once per academic year.

If the student completes language certificates of different levels during one semester, the completed language certificate of the highest level is considered in the next academic year.

Requirement for the 1st scholarship:

  • accepted YKI 2 certificate at the basic level, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages level A2
  • at least two components of language skills must meet the requirements of level 2, and the other components at least of level 1.

Requirement for the 2nd scholarship:

  • accepted YKI 3 certificate at the intermediate level, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages level B1
  • at least two components of the language skills must meet the requirements of level 3

Requirement for the 3rd scholarship:

  • accepted YKI 4 certificate at the intermediate level, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages level B2
  • at least two components of language skills must meet the requirements of level 4, and the other components at least of level 3

Requirement for the 4th scholarship:

  • accepted YKI 4 certificate at the intermediate level, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages level B2
  • the target time of completing the certificate is over three years.

The requirements for the scholarships are minimum requirements. For example, if the student has completed the YKI certificate which meets the requirements of 2nd scholarship, he/she can also apply for the 1st scholarship with it. The student may be granted a scholarship with the same YKI certificate in different years, if the certificate in question demonstrates that the language skills requirements are met.

If the requirements for the scholarship are met, the scholarship will be refunded to the student in connection with the next tuition fee payment.

If the student applies for the scholarship for the last academic year of the studies, the scholarship will be paid to the student’s bank account after the studies have ended.

If the student applies for the scholarship after they have already paid the tuition fee for the next academic year, the scholarship will be refunded in connection with the tuition fee payment for the academic year after that.

Scholarships are not granted retrospectively for past academic years. However, students who have started their studies in January, can be granted the scholarship for the first semester exceptionally in connection with the 4th scholarship if they have not been granted it yet.

Turku UAS awards a 100% scholarship to degree students under temporary protection for the academic year 2022–2023 and 2023-2024. The residence permit card and decision on temporary protection is required for granting the scholarship.
