Study contents
The core of their knowledge is formed by strong musical and pedagogical skills. Graduates most often work as instrument and vocal teachers or teachers in basic music education in music institutes. The studies also prepare for various jobs as musicians, for example, as an orchestra musician, an accompanist, a chorister or a soloist.
Music studies in the university of applied sciences are preceded by a multiyear music training in elementary training of arts and also often in secondary education. The choice of the main instrument is often made years before starting the higher education studies. The choice between an instrument and a vocal teacher and a teacher in basic music education is made at the application phase at the latest.
Studies in musical expression form the majority of the degree and continue during the entire period of studies. They contain studies covering the student’s own main instrument and various ensemble playing and chorister roles. Weekly music instrument/vocal lessons, independent working and regular graded performances help students to develop their instrumental skills and deepen their interpretative views. Various ensemble tasks and vocal courses continue throughout the entire period of studies.
Courses in music pedagogy go side by side with the musical expression. Students’ own relationship with music, instrument/vocal skills, personality and extensive pedagogic vision form the basis of the teachership. Pedagogic studies contain courses in instrument pedagogy or basic music education, which last the entire study time. The degree qualifies the student to work as an instrument and a vocal teacher or a teacher in basic music education in music institutions. The pedagogic studies of 60 ECTS credits included in the degree programme gives the student the qualification to work as a general teacher.
Added value to the studies is brought by numerous performance events. During the studies, students are offered opportunities for solo performances both as a soloist in the school’s own orchestra and annually in the Young Soloists’ Concert organized together with Turku Philharmonic Orchestra.
