Health Tech Lab
Health Tech Lab is a research and development environment, a testbed, that supports the product development of health and sports technology. We are an active expert partner for companies in the field and an enabler of high-quality digital health products and solutions. Through us, your organization will have access to the expertise, facilities and equipment.
In our research and development laboratory, we utilise e.g sensor technology, biosignal measurement and analysis, software development, software integration and artificial intelligence, as well as usability planning methods.
Health technology students are involved in the production of research and development services under the guidance of Turku UAS experts
Our services
- Usability evaluation and testing of devices and services. Product development and testing can be made both in the Health Tech Lab premises and in field conditions as a part of genuine, experienced situations.
- User interface design (UI/UX), information system design and development, and software development.
- Medical device product development, risk management and regulatory competence (IVDR / MDR).
- Expert services, including access to laboratory equipment.
Our core competencies also include the production of synthetic data, data privacy technologies and ethical AI systems in the healthcare sector. We also carry out larger research and development projects, which means that we have access to the project professionals’ years of experience in national and international funding opportunities.
Laboratory equipment
iMotions Research Platform
A central tool in the research laboratory, the iMotions software environment, enables the cooperation of several devices in studies. With the software, you can execute studies where the data obtained from devices is interpreted and analyzed seamlessly and simultaneously. The teaching and research opportunities provided by the software have raised the combination and analysis of different data sources to a whole new level. Read more on the manufacturer’s website
EEG headsets
Health Tech Lab has two kinds of EEG headsets at the research laboratory. The EEG headsets of Neuroelectrics and OpenBCI enable the analysis of the brain functions of the research subject as a part of the studies. The electrical signals of the brain are studied with EEG, and the obtained data can be utilized in e.g., product development or usability testing. EEG headsets have opened a new dimension to research, and by utilizing different sources of data, we can obtain more information on research situations than ever before. Combining the headsets with other sensors enables increasingly fluent biometric measurements.
BioPac MP160
BioPac MP160 is a top-of-the-range modular data collection and analysis system. The entity, which also works with wireless sensors, can be modified according to each research situation and need. The system enables all measurements according to the current standards, such as EKG, HRV, EEG and EMG, and it can be tailored according to the needs of the research. The MRI compatible parts increase the research opportunities even further. Read more on the manufacturer’s website
Shimmer Consensys Development kit
With Shimmer, we collect data from biometric measurements, such as IMU, EKG, EMG and GSR. The Shimmer equipment has greatly assisted in teaching and provided support for research due to its modular and extensive range of sensors. Read more on the manufacturer’s website
Eye tracking
The laboratory’s range of sensors also includes different kinds of eye tracking devices. Pupil Labs Invisible and Tobii Pro Glasses are wearable glasses, which enable the tracking anywhere and at any time. Tobii Pro Fusion is a tracking device which is attached to a display, and it is a useful tool in software development and as a part of research. Eye tracking can be checked in real time or the data can be collected for later analysis.
Patient monitor
The patient monitor is a portable multi-parameter unit that can measure and monitor several different values from adults, children and newborn patients, as well as in the hospital environment as well as in the ambulance. The device can operate alone or connected to a hospital information system. The patient monitor can be used to measure blood pressure, take electrocardiogram, and monitor heart rate and oxygen saturation. There are two monitors in the laboratory, Ge Healthcare B125 and Philips Intellivue Mx100.
Wearable devices
The Health Tech Lab has various health-related consumer electronics, which provide an opportunity to collect data and analyse, for example, perceived stress and recovery.
AR- and VR-devices
The Health tech Lab has augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) devices that can be utilised, for example, in design or simulation of various test environments. In the laboratory you can find, for example, Microsoft HoloLens 2.

An active expert partner
Health Technology Research Group
Behind the Health Tech Lab is the Health Technology Research Group, which includes professionals in health technology, data analytics and software development. Turku University of Applied Sciences has long been involved in making Finland a top export country for health technology. We have networked extensively in Finland and internationally. We are constantly looking for new research and development partners for our projects.
Multidisciplinary expertise to support product development
The cooperation partners of the research lab include companies, hospital districts, municipalities, health care organisations, third sector actors, higher education institutions and research and development units.
Health Tech Lab is also a learning environment
ICT students of Turku UAS’ participate in the production of research and development services in the Health Tech Lab and can work on projects under the guidance of experts.
Practical training
There is a constant search for the Health Tech Lab interns and it is also possible to complete the internship in the middle of the semester. In the internship, you work on RDI projects or business assignments, for example in programming, testing and documentation.
The internship can also be done part-time in addition to the studies, and it is sometimes possible to tailor the content and scope of the internship to suit your own needs. Internships are unpaid, but at a later stage it may be possible to work on projects as a student assistant.
