Capstone Innovation Projects
In multidisciplinary Capstone Innovation Projects, a group of students come up with a product prototype, service concept or other solution to a business challenge presented by the client.
Capstone projects combine the multidisciplinary skills of engineering and business students. The teams often include exchange students, which also provides an international perspective. The cooperation between the students and the organisation is confidential.
A Capstone project offers your company or organisation
- fresh ideas and new perspectives from students on how to develop activities
- the opportunity to make contacts with graduating students
- access to Turku UAS’ comprehensive laboratories, facilities, and equipment for project use
- teacher support for project implementation
For students, the Capstone Project is an opportunity to showcase their skills. The project is part of students’ final year studies and gives them valuable work experience.
Offer an Assignment for a Capstone Project
Capstone projects begin at the start of each semester, in January or September, and typically last about 3–4 months. We are continually seeking new project partners for upcoming Capstone projects.
We ask that participating companies provide:
- a project assignment
- participation in the kick-off event
- communication with the student team and provision of necessary materials
- participation in the presentation of the project results in an agreed-upon format

Here’s how a Capstone project progresses
1
Contact us and tell us about your needs
Tell us what kind of problem you are looking for a solution to. Together, we’ll assess whether the Capstone project meets your needs. You will receive more detailed instructions on how to present your project idea at the kick-off fair.
2
Present your project to students at the kick-off event
At the kick-off event, you can meet students and present your project idea to them. After the kick-off event the teacher will put together the best student team for your organisation’s needs.
Students also have a say in which projects they take part in. This ensures that you get the most motivated participants for your project.
3
A project can start
Once the student team is selected, the project can begin. Together with the student team, you will refine the project’s assignment, timeline and objectives.
The maximum number of students in a student team is 10. Teams are often multidisciplinary and include our international exchange and degree students.
4
The project progresses with student-led management (3–4 months)
The student team will work on the project during the semester alongside other courses. Students are responsible for the progress of the project, under the guidance of the teacher.
However, we hope that you will keep in touch with the students and provide them with any additional information they may need during the project.
5
Done!
Students will present you with the final outcome of the project: a product prototype, a service concept, a design or any other output you have agreed together.

Capstone is a learning environment
Capstone is a learning environment for business and engineering students, where project skills are reinforced and learning is put into practice in real-life projects.
Project skills are developed in stages during your studies, and the Capstone project is the third step on the “project skills ladder”.
The research team behind Capstone
The Practice-Based Pedagogy research group at Turku University of Applied Sciences provides research-based knowledge and new pedagogical methods and approaches for the development of meaningful learning, quality education and competence.
A key part of the research group’s activities is the development of Capstone and other project skills courses.
