Film and Media
We create innovative solutions for the changing media industry. We support working life in the transformation of the media.
The media is stories. The digital revolution is changing the media and film industry’s content production, ways of working and business, and stories are told in new ways. Changes in the media are reflected in society as a whole. Cross-disciplinary and multi-media storytelling interests us and we work with creative, commercial and artistic content production.
Our research team develops innovative solutions that support the media and film industry as the world of work changes. We examine the roles of media, culture and film in societal change, global transformations, sustainable development and the building of diverse communities. We study media professionalism and create new practices for teaching.
What we want to develop?
Our research group focuses on:
- the transformation brought about by digitalisation and AI into content production and methods of media
- new ways of storytelling and expression
- virtual and artificial intelligence productions
- visualizations, videomapping and projections
- The role of media and culture in various innovation and development processes
When technology changes the ways of doing things, new opportunities are created to tell and experience. Our mission is to develop solutions that support the media and film industry as the world changes – creativity, sustainability and storytelling first.

This is what we research
The emotional impact of media in public spaces
How to get people to act calmly in the crowded vaccination lounge and move in the desired direction? Or how to create an experiential, multi-sensory experience space from the hotel elevator?
The joint project between Turku University of Applied Sciences and the University of Turku, as well as corporate partners, studies the emotional impact of media in public spaces. The results benefit several industries, from elevator manufacturers to architects and from smart lighting manufacturers to media content producers.
Shaping the Perspectives of Future Journalists
The JOCID (Journalism for Civic Involvement, Democracy and Development) Network has been cooperating since 2007. The network consists of five higher education institutions in Finland, Ghana, Namibia and Tanzania.
Many years of JOCID cooperation within the framework of the North–South–South programme have proven to be very successful and fruitful. The network has produced remarkable results, particularly in supporting its African partners in their endeavours to build functional radio studio facilities and to develop cross media skills in higher education by using accessible technical solutions.
The publication “Shaping the Perspectives of Future Journalists” presents the experiences, results and successes of eight years of cooperation between these Finnish and the African higher education institutions.
Our experts
Our research group combines the top expertise of the teachers in their field, fresh and creative ideas of the students, and the strong funding and project expertise of the Turku UAS project professionals.
Learning environments support the research group’s activities
Our Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) activities are closely linked to teaching. The active participation of students in projects and learning environments also ensures that students are up to the competence requirements of working life in their own field when they graduate.
