TUKHUK – Developing the City of Turku stormwater monitoring

Duration of the project
Source of funding
City of Turku
Total funding
100 000 €
Together with the City of Turku’s Environmental Protection Department, we are developing the monitoring of the city’s stormwaters. Real-time and comprehensive monitoring will support the city’s environmental and climate work and sustainable development of urban areas.
To prevent adverse environmental impacts of stormwaters and to support better quantitative and qualitative management, comprehensive knowledge of stormwater and its behaviour in the urban environment is needed. Therefore, effective monitoring of stormwater quantity and quality is an essential part of urban stormwater management plans.
In parallel to and building on the results of other projects at Turku University of Applied Sciences, we will further develop comprehensive monitoring and management methods for stormwaters together with the City of Turku Environmental Protection Department, in particular by developing comprehensive data collection, presentation and dissemination on stormwater quantity and quality in different urban environments and at three stormwater management pilot sites.
The results of the project will serve end-users and research in the field, as well as developing knowledge-based approaches to prepare for extreme weather events and targeting stormwater management measures to the catchment areas of the most sensitive receiving water bodies in terms of natural values and to the most critical areas in terms of water pollution.
