European elderly care experiences labour shortages. There is a significant mismatch between capacity and the demand for services. This causes stress and burnout for healthcare workers, informal caregivers, and leaders in elderly care, while also negatively impacting mental health and well-being. The challenges affect the resilient performance and quality of healthcare, exacerbating recruitment and retention issues, compromising patient safety, and increasing the burden on healthcare workers and informal caregivers. The growing life expectancy further increases the demand for workers.
Research shows that leaders have a significant impact on the quality, safety, and resilient performance of care. Leaders in elderly care services need evidence-based tools, interventions, and training to map, understand, and address the mismatch between capacity and demands. Tailored interventions for informal caregivers are also needed to promote their well-being, motivation, and skills.
Support4Resilience (S4R) is a research project aimed at improving the working conditions of employees, patient safety, and the quality of services in elderly care by supporting leaders in redesigning working conditions and improving organizational structures across Europe. The goal of the S4R project is to develop, implement, and evaluate an evidence-based digital S4R toolkit that supports leaders in promoting the resilience and mental health of employees and informal caregivers. A key objective is to create a functioning system where leaders have the expertise and ability to respond to and adapt to workforce needs and proposals. This leads to better working conditions, improved mental health, resilient performance, and a reduction in stress and burnout.
