Fostering implementation of the ChemClimCircle approach to Green Public Procurement in the Baltic Sea Region

Implementing criteria for chemicals, climate and circularity in procurement

In the ChemClimCircle2 project, we are developing capabilities and practices on how to take toxic chemicals, climate issues and the circular economy into account in public procurement. Together with project partners and municipalities and cities, we are developing procurement processes to ensure a more sustainable future.

Environmental considerations may be taken into account in public procurement, but often separately. In order for materials to function safely in the circular economy, they must be both recyclable, climate-neutral and tox-free.

The international ChemClimCircle2 (CCC2) project is co-funded by Interreg Baltic Sea Region. It continues the work previously carried out in the CCC1 project. The project promotes sustainable procurement and simultaneously incorporates the perspective of toxic chemicals, the climate and the circular economy into public procurement more comprehensively than at present.

In the CCC2 project we

  • provide tools and information to help public organisations drive demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly products and services
  • prepare an operating model for sustainable procurement and a model for monitoring and assessing sustainability
  • develop the impact assessment of individual procurements, and
  • prepare training materials.

The developed operating model will be tested in the municipalities participating in the project. Each municipality will implement a minimum of three procurement pilots in procurement categories with significant environmental impacts.

With the new model and increased capacities, public actors will have better solutions for a climate-neutral and sustainable future.
