Construction 2035

Bringing the construction industry together for a green transition and sustainable development

In the coming years, the construction sector will face major challenges through the green transition and digitalization. Approximately half of the world’s raw materials are used for construction each year, and construction and buildings consume approximately 40% of used primary energy.

At the same time, the built environment (construction, heating of buildings and electricity use) produces about a third of global greenhouse gas emissions. The steep emission reduction targets, the green transition requirements and the changes introduced by the new Construction Act from the beginning of 2025 will put the entire construction industry in a new situation.

Changes in the operating environment require a change of direction in the construction sector and create pressure for the continuous development of the sector also in Turku. Challenges commonly identified in the field include lack of subscriber expertise, low utilization of digital tools and inefficiencies in production compared to other industries. Although the above factors are generally known and have been attempted to be solved in various projects, the actors in the construction sector in the Turku region lack a comprehensive shared vision and will to remedy the situation.

Under the leadership of Turku University of Applied Sciences, the development community created in the Construction 2035 project brings together the actors in the construction sector in the area and creates a shared vision for the actors to change the direction of the construction sector. Through its actions, the project promotes progressive construction activities in Turku, especially in the Kupittaa Kärki area, that repair the operating methods of the construction industry and meet the conditions for green transition.
