Cognitive Robotics Initiative for Industry 5.0

Universities and companies advancing cognitive robotics
A drawn picture with robots and humans

Turku University of Applied Sciences, Centria University of Applied Sciences, Satakunta University of Applied Sciences, and Vaasa University of Applied Sciences are collaborating on a project to promote the utilization of cognitive robotics and related technologies in the manufacturing industry. In cooperation with companies, the project aims to develop innovations, strengthen expertise, and accelerate the adoption and experimentation of advanced robotics applications.

The project focuses on enhancing the capabilities of robots and improving human-robot interaction. A key objective is to significantly raise the level of expertise in the technologies required for advanced robotics applications, including various machine vision technologies and machine learning-based methods. By integrating these capabilities into the research and development activities of universities, the project seeks to have a direct positive impact on the efficiency, adaptability, and thus the competitiveness of the manufacturing industry.

By leveraging the latest advancements and research results in cognitive robotics, the project supports the goal of building smarter and more flexible production environments where robots can safely collaborate with humans on traditionally challenging tasks in robotics. In addition to strengthening the competitiveness of national and European manufacturing industries, the project aims to promote international cooperation in education and research, ensuring that Finnish expertise remains at the forefront of technological development in a rapidly changing global environment.

The project, supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the South Savo Centre for Economic Development, Transport, and the Environment (ELY Centre), will continue until the end of 2027.
