Bike across the Baltic

Improving bicycle tourism around the Baltic Sea
Henkilöitä pyöräilemässä luonnon keskellä.

The Bike across the Baltic – Improving bicycle tourism around the Baltic Sea (BAB) project aims to develop the EuroVelo 10 cycling route running through all nine countries in the Baltic Sea region. The project focuses on chosen route sections in the project partner countries Estonia, Finland, Poland and Sweden.

Interest in sustainable and active travel using intermodal transport options, including public transport and cycling, is increasing. However, the BAB project partners have recognized the services along the EuroVelo 10 route have not yet developed to their full potential. The regional and local public authorities who carry out the bicycling route development and improvement along the EV 10 route have different capacities for their work. This leads to uneven and fragmented development of the route and hinders SMEs and NGOs ability to effectively work to advance cycle tourism along the route and connection between the countries. The project will offer opportunities for improved inter- and transnational cooperation through co-creation and peer learning workshops.

The BAB project will address the lack of trans-Baltic cooperation amongst regions and transport and tourism stakeholders by strengthening public authorities’ organizational capacity to develop and improve the EV10. This requires five types of actions:

  • Benchmarking of cycle tourism and intermodal transport initiatives
  • Route assessment and description development
  • Capacity development and peer learning activities
  • Knowledge transfer
  • Improving communication to local citizens and visitors

Well-developed sustainable transnational cycle tourism routes with public transport connections enhance the connectivity and accessibility of the Baltic Sea region and create new possibilities to explore it for citizens and visitors.
